A 59-year-old Trenton man was killed when his bicycle was struck by a car as he was riding on Route 1 northbound, near I-295, around 9:30 a.m. Monday, according to Lawrence police Lt. Charles B. Edgar.
Aguedo Cruz, 59, who suffered injuries to his head, arms and legs, died a short time later at Capital Health System Regional Medical Center in Trenton, Lt. Edgar said. Police officers found him unconscious after the 9:38 a.m. accident.
Mr. Cruz was struck by a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am coupe driven by Frank Cochran, 59, of Lambertville, Lt. Edgar said. The driver of the car was not injured, but police and emergency medical technicians treated Mr. Cruz on the scene.
Route 1 northbound was closed for about two hours while police investigated the accident. Motorists were directed to a detour on I-295 south until Route 1 was reopened to traffic at 11:39 a.m., he said.
The accident is under investigation by Police Officer Ronald Buchanan and Det. Todd Caruso of the Lawrence Township Police Department. They are being assisted by Det. Tony Abarno of the Mercer County Serious Collision Response Team.
Anyone who witnessed the accident is being asked to call Officer Buchanan or Detective Caruso at 609-896-1111.
