HILLSBOROUGH: Dukes football summaries from Sept. 23

The Hillsborough Dukes hosted Somerville and South Plainfield on Sunday, Sept. 23. The Dukes competed in games across four levels at the Hillsborough High School field starting at 8:30 in the morning.

Flag teams

The Yellow team had a strong effort on both sides of the ball. The blocking of Liam Schwartz, Anthony Sowinski, Marcus Baker, Steven Hunt and Jack Geraci opened holes that led to touchdowns by Cole Hayden, Tristan Jose and Francesca Schiro. Quarterback CJ Olney attempted two passes, and Adrian Carley and James Grohe had key runs.

The Red squad also was effective offensively and defensively. Wade Liedl scored a touchdown on a pass from Jack O’Donnell, who also completed a pass to Trey McKeever. O’Donnell also scored on a quarterback keeper. Chris Spinelli also ran for big gains.
The offense was aided by the blocking of Dain Smith, Chris DeCicco, Jack Moran and Layne Carley. The defense was led Philip Unangst, Billy Meszaros, Jason Roser, JB McCrea, Carley and Liedl.

Mitey Mites

The Mitey Mites had a hard-fought game against Somerville, but were held out of the end zone. The defense had notable performances by Michael Boer, Nate Kepnis and Luke Moleski. The boys are looking forward to getting back at it next week.

Junior Pee Wee

The Junior Pee Wee team had a great day against Somerville in all facets. Special teams were led by a long return by Kyle Hudak, successful onside kicks by Mark MClan and Arex Wyatt with successful PATs kicking and passing.

The offense was led by touchdown runs from Levonaitis (2), Jason Chedid and a touchdown reception by MClan with the pass thrown by Andre Scheflin. Chedid also had a TD-saving tackle to spur the defense.

PeeWee

The Hillsborough Duke PeeWee came out with a 25-13 win over South Plainfield. Defensive standouts included Varun Deb and Zach Buccellatto shoring up the ends, Eric Booth and Sean McGrath creating havoc at linebacker, Randy Potts slicing at nose guard, and Dion’Dre Jackson at corner.

Alexander Kurowski ran for two TDs, Charlie Cohan for one and Allen Holmon had an interception for a touchdown. The boys played with confidence and pride, and will ride this performance into next Sunday’s game.

Cheer

All of the football teams would like to thank the Dukes cheer squads for their support. The girls cheered for the football teams throughout their games, and led the fans in their support of the Dukes on the field. The halftime routines are improving weekly and we can’t wait to see them perform at their competitions.
