Exhibition by The New Art Group entitled "Bound/Brook"

Hamilton Street Gallery
The New Art Group will be featured in an exhibit titled Bound/Brook at the Hamilton Street Gallery in Bound Brook, NJ from September 16 – October 25.
All are welcome to the opening reception on Sunday, September 16, from 2-6pm.
The slash in the show title provides a separation of the town name into two distinct
components, opening up the possibilities substantially for interpretation. The members of the New Art Group for this exhibition will be Susan Ahlstrom, Francesca Azzara, Nancy Ori, Heidi Sussman, Jane Caminos, Michael Teters and Paul Pinkman.  Also featured in this exhibit will be paintings by Jim Fuess, former leader of the group who recently passed away.
A variety of viewpoints will be expressed by these artists in a variety of mediums. Some of the artists interpreted the theme in this way:  photographers Nancy Ori and Heidi Sussman have taken the title literally. Heidi spent time photographing in Bound Brook while getting absorbed in a variety of subjects that span centuries; from the intriguing architecture of Victorian houses to the abstract patterns she found while exploring the floodgates. Susan Ahlstrom who works in clay and wood, was also influenced by the arches and surprising variations of brick work placement that characterizes the local structures. Nancy Ori worked with the word Brook as she expresses beauty in the landscape. Her images are of brook scenes where in some cases the water is moving in a flowing gesture. She is influenced by the constant changing forms, colors and relationships in nature.
Jane Caminos featured the Bound concept in her oil paintings expressing the plight of female victims around the world of rape, mutilation, slavery, acid burns, and those bound as prisoners. Also working with the idea of Bound, is Francesca Azzara who’s newest encaustic series surveys the relationship of fears, secrets and confessions as she looks for visual solutions to communicate her silence.  The symbolic use of twine binding and twisting, and sealing her words in wax, has revealed itself as a cathartic exercise that has given closure to her past.   Paul Pinkman’s work speaks to how we are bound to the environment by our very nature and help us look into the perspective of difference and connection, of being human and being part of nature.
Michael Teters is also working with the word Bound or perhaps Unbound with his encaustic paintings relating to the sheer volume of information we are exposed to and our inability to process all the words and data. In spite of constant communication, ties are broken and meanings are lost in the noise.

The New Art Group (NAG) was formed about 20 years ago with a goal to develop opportunities for artists to exhibit their work. They are currently based out of the Watchung Arts Center in Watchung where they assist in curating exhibitions. What makes the NAG unique is that it is a group of artists unified by intent rather than style or medium.  Each show is themed and has a central idea or focus. This brings different views to each show rather than just a random collection of art.
