South Brunswick High School will retire the jersey of star football player Mohamed Sanu during the Oct. 26 game against Sayreville, according to former coach Rick Mantz.
In an email Wednesday, Mr. Mantz said Sanu’s #2 jersey would be framed and placed below the scoreboard during halftime of the game.
Sanu wore #2 as a quarterback and safety for the Vikings in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
He was not eligible to play during his senior year in 2009 because he turned 19 on Aug. 22 and was not allowed to play due to NJSIAA rules.
Mr. Mantz said that he still practiced with the Vikings as a scout team player and was the “Get-back” Coach on Friday nights.
He graduated from SBHS in Jan 2009 and enrolled at Rutgers University in New Brunswick that spring where he set many school and Big East receiving records.
”When Mo stopped playing at SBHS, we informed him that we were not going to issue his #2 jersey (to anyone else), Mr. Mantz said. “He asked that we allow Jevon Tyree to wear it and Jevon did until last year when he graduated. No other varsity football player at South Brunswick will wear #2.”
Sanu was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round earlier this year, and is now part of that NFL team.
Because the team has a bye week Oct. 28, Sanu is expected to fly home and be present for the presentation, according to Mr. Mantz.
