Retired officer run down in robbery

EDISON — A robbery at the CVS store on Route 1 around 12:07 p.m. on Jan. 14 left a retired Edison police officer injured and two suspects facing charges, according to police.

Charles Piazza, 45, and Karen Chattin, 50, both of Southampton, Pa., were charged with robbery, said Edison police Sgt. Darrin Cerminaro.

A store manager observed Piazza allegedly concealing various cosmetics and then walking out of the store, according to police. The manager, along with another employee, confronted Piazza, and an altercation ensued, according to police.

A witness, who was a retired Edison police officer, attempted to assist the employees, police said.

Piazza fled toward a vehicle on Holly Place. The vehicle was being driven by Chattin, police said. The retired police officer identified himself and ordered the two suspects to stop.

The suspects proceeded and struck the retired police officer in the legs, causing him to hit the windshield, police said. The officer suffered back and head injuries, and was treated by emergency medical services.

The cosmetics allegedly stolen from the CVS, worth $1,225, were recovered, police said.
