TRENTON: Outdoor recreation yields economic benefits

   TRENTON — Newly released figures from the Outdoor Industry Association show that outdoor recreation areas generate billions of dollars in economic benefits for New Jersey and result in 158,000 direct New Jersey jobs.
   The figures are further proof of the importance of preserving parks and open space in New Jersey and underscore the need for a long-term source of sustainable Green Acres funding.
   ”These figures make clear that preserving our parks and open space directly benefits our economy here in the Garden State,” said Tom Gilbert, NJ Keep It Green chairman. “The governor and legislature must act this year to put a long-term source of sustainable preservation funding in place to protect our open spaces and protect our economy.”
   According to the figures released today by the Outdoor Industry Association (outdoorindustry.org/recreationeconomy), outdoor recreation in New Jersey, including in areas such as the Pinelands and Island Beach State Park, generates:
   — $17.8 billion in consumer spending;
   — $6.1 billion in wages and salaries ;
   — $1.3 billion in state and local tax revenue;
   — 158,000 direct jobs.
   ”This data demonstrates that outdoor recreation is an important driver of New Jersey’s economy supporting jobs, businesses and communities,” said Kelly Mooij, NJ Keep It Green coordinator. “With the last of the 2009 bond funds for Green Acres, Blue Acres, Farmland and Historic Preservation programs now allocated, there is an urgent need for action this year.”
   NJ Keep It Green supports dedicating at least $200 million annually for the next several decades to fund the full suite of preservation programs — Green Acres, Blue Acres, Farmland and Historic Preservation. This $200 million represents less than 1 percent of total state revenues and less than one fifth of one cent of the 7-cent sales tax, based on FY2012 revenues.
   NJ Keep It Green is a coalition of more than 175 park and conservation advocates working to create a long-term, dedicated source of funding for the preservation and stewardship of New Jersey’s natural areas, waterways, parks, farmland and historic sites.
   NJ Keep It Green led successful campaigns to pass statewide ballot measures in 2006, 2007, and 2009 generating $600 million for state open space, farmland and historic preservation programs. For more information or to sign the NJ Keep It Green Statement of Support, visit www.njkeepitgreen.org.
