Keith McCoy, assistant director of the Somerset Country Library, and Ed Smith, director of the Manville Library, were the guest speakers at the Feb. 14 meeting of the Manville Senior Citizens.
They discussed the benefits of joining the county system, which gave us more services, new programs for adults and teens, activities, expanded hours and more computer access. The current Manville library card can be used at any county library. The library has an outreach service that delivers books to the homebound. Also if you have a kindle, nook or e-reader you can download books for free. Contact the library for these services.
Lynn Whitenight, senior exercise instructor, and her walk chair class gave a demonstration of the various exercises they do. It was to showcase that there is an activity for everyone regardless of your limitations or abilities and you can exercise at your own pace.
Edward Eick and Walter Collett from the Somerset County Block Grant Housing Rehab Program went over the program to rehabilitate your single-family home. There is an income level criteria for the grant. The program covers repairs as well as home winterization.
New Jersey-American Water is changing the meters in town. The company will send a letter and call ahead to make an appointment for the meter work.
The bulk and brush pick-up on alternating Tuesdays has resumed. March 5 will be bulk pick-up. You can always call the Department of Public Works as its on their message system what is being picked up that particular Tuesday.
Borough Administrator Gary Garwacke gave an update on the Wal-Marts supermarket. All approvals are in and it expects to be in operation by October.
Two new restaurants The Flaming Grill and Chick Pea and Farmer will be coming to town later this year.
If you plan to appeal your tax bill, the forms can be picked up at the Somerset County Board of Taxation at 27 Warren St., Somerville, and must be filed by April 1.
The Manville Senior Citizens meet at 12:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the VFW on Washington Avenue. Residents of Manville age 50 and older are eligible for membership. Also, persons who do not remain residents of Manville are still eligible for membership.
Canned goods or nonperishable food items will continue to be collected before each meeting, as well as soup labels. Remember to bring one item per member to help stock the Food Bank.
Blood pressure screening is held before the beginning of each meeting for members.
Recreation events
Atlantic City The bus leaves at 9 a.m. from the VFW parking lot on the second Wednesday of each month for Showboat Casino. The cost is $30, which will be returned. This trip is open to the public by reservations only. The next trip will be on March 13. Make your reservation with Josephine Pschar at 908-722-0156.
