Scavenger hunt
and history walk
The Blackwells Mills Canal House will sponsor a Canal Scavenger Hunt and History Walk along the Delaware and Raritan Canal at 2 p.m. Join canal enthusiasts Linda and Bob Barth as they guide children and their parents along the towpath to learn about this historic waterway. Then return to the bridge tender’s home for a scavenger hunt for children aged 12 and under. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required and is limited to the first 35 participants. Call the Canal House 732-873-2133 or Barbara at 908-369-0357 to register. Prizes will be awarded. Refreshments for everyone. The Plainsboro Public Library Geek League is offering free assistance to the public regarding the use of their electronic devices including smartphones, cell phones, laptops, tablets, e-readers, and iPods. The Geek League is made up of tech-savvy high school volunteers willing to address both simple and complex issues. Drop in between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the second floor History Room. Composting
program
The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County will host a program, “Composting Creating your own Black Gold room 1-2:30 p.m. at the Mercer Educational Gardens, 431 A Federal City Road, Pennington, adjacent to the Mercer County Equestrian Center.
Turn your kitchen scraps, fallen leaves, plant clipping and other materials into “Black Gold” organic compost that enriches soil and improves its structure. Master Gardeners will discuss and demonstrate strategies for successful composting. Learn how to make a no-cost compost bin from wood pallets. Adding horse manure speeds the composting process, so participants can visit the Mercer County Equestrian Center barn and pick up manure to take home. Bring a lidded container for manure. To benefit the Master Gardeners of Mercer County educational programs, a donation of $3 is suggested.

Baby Boom
Tsunami
Lowell Arye, deputy commissioner at the state Department of Human Services, will give a lecture at Mercer County Community College at noon in the Communications Building, room 107. The discussion, “The Baby Boom Tsunami: Implications for Services and Workforce for the Next Generation,” is part of the college’s Spring Distinguished Lecture Series at the West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. The event is free and open to the public.
In his discussion, Mr. Arye will discuss the implications of the baby boom generation on the U.S. over the next 30 years. He will provide an overview of the aging U.S. population, in particular in Mercer County, and discuss the implications of the baby boomers on citizen entitlements and long-term services and support structure. He will also talk about how this wave of individuals who are beginning to leave the workforce will provide expanded career opportunities for the next generation.

The Pine Barrens:
Three Perspectives
A discussion featuring illustrator/writer Allen Crawford, filmmaker David Kessler, and horticulturalist Bill Smith, will offer various perspectives of the Pine Barrens at 7 p.m. at Morven Museum and Gardens, 55 Stockton St. Princeton.
Mr. Crawford will give an overview of the botanical wonders of the Pine Barrens, and a brief personal slideshow of the native Pine Barrens plants and wildlife that he’s encountered over the years. Mr. Kessler will share a few short selections from “Pines,” his ongoing film project about the Pine Barrens. Mr. Smith of Rarefind Nursery will share some images of his famous bog garden, and discuss the care and culture of native Pine Barrens plants. He will also bring a “container bog garden.”

Veterans Day

The Princeton Elks Lodge monthly Veterans Day meeting and lunch will be held at noon at the Princeton Elk Lodge located at 345 Route 518, Skillman.
