Dems Skaar, Storipan to hold Saturday brunch
   Sat., May 3 — The Hillsborough Democratic Party will hold a brunch reception for its officially endorsed Township Committee candidates, Jason Storipan and Art Skaar, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hearthstone Clubhouse, 1 Waterman Lane, Hillsborough. Invited guests will include Janice Kovach, District 7 candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, and Anthony Pranzitelli and Joan Pritchard, candidates for Somerset County Board of Freeholders.
   The hot and cold buffet will be provided by A Catered Affair. Supporters wishing to meet the candidates and exchange views are encouraged to attend. The suggested donation is $30 per person. Checks should be made payable to “Committee to Elect Storipan and Skaar” and mailed to Art Skaar, 425 Amwell Road, Suite 4, Hillsborough, NJ 08844. Attendees can also pay at the door.

Cheerleaders to hold spring cheer clinic
   Sun., May 4 — Hillsborough High School cheerleaders will hold their annual spring cheer clinic for children in grades K-8 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the high school gym. Job seekers group discusses ‘green value’
   Wed., May 7 — Jewish Family Service offers a free support group for job seekers who are unemployed, underemployed or seeking a career change, 7-9 p.m., at 150-A West High St., Somerville.

’Spelling Bee’ theater coming to school stage
   May 9 and 10 — Hillsborough High School Theatre presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a long once-act musical comedy that centers on a fictional spelling bee in a middle school. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. Saturday, in the auditorium of Hillsborough High School, 466 Raider Blvd. $12 for reserved seating. Auxiliary invites all to come to meeting
   Tues., May 13 — Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2 Auxiliary invites potential members to come to meeting at 8 p.m. on second floor of the firehouse on Route 206, next to Hillsborough Radiology. The auxiliary assists and supports volunteer firemen and their families, and to raise funds for the fire company and charities. Some members go to fires to give food and drinks to keep the firefighters going. The auxiliary also can participate in parades and fire company events. The auxiliary meets on the second Tuesday of each month.

Gardeners’ questions answered by master
   Thurs., May 15 — Master Gardener Marylin Hulme will lead a discussion based on previously submitted gardening questions at the Neshanic Garden Club’s monthly meeting at 11 a.m. at the Station House on Olive Street, Neshanic Station. This will be followed by a plant auction; members should bring cash or check for bidding on a new plant. The club meeting begins at 9:45. Light luncheon at noon. Library organizes book festival for kids
   Sat., May 17 — More than 20 authors and illustrators of books for children through young adults will appear at the first Hillsborough Public Library’s Children’s Book Festival on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
   There will be readings and presentations by authors, and books will be available for sale and signing. Discounts will be given to patrons with library cards. Proceeds from sales will support activities and improvements at the library.
   Among the authors scheduled are Monica Wellington, Artie Bennett, Ana Lomba and Kit Grindstaff. Presentations take place every 20 minutes.
Handbell concert to fight river blindness
   Sun., May 18 — Handbell artist Hyosang Park will use her skills to heal people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She and pianist Akiko Hosaki will perform a benefit concert for the United Front Against Riverblindness at 5 p.m. at Hillsborough Reformed Church at Millstone, on the corner of Amwell Road and Route 533. Veterans: Save date for holiday breakfast
      Sat., May 24 — Hillsborough veterans and widows of veterans are encouraged to mark for the township’s annual Salute to Veterans breakfast, followed by the holiday parade and Garden of Honor commemoration program.
   Non-profit groups that wish to march in the parade are invited to sign up online through the Parks and Recreation website.
Firefighters raise money with golf outing
   Mon., June 2 — Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 will hold its 15th annual golf outing on at Royce Brook Golf Club in Hillsborough. Local businesses are asked to consider becoming a sponsor and golfers are invited to play in the fundraiser for the fire company. Golf outing chairman is Sam Rozycki at 609-610-4180.
Church sponsors chicken dinner, bake sale
   Sat., June 7 — A chicken marsala or francaise dinner and bake sale will be held at the South Branch Reformed Church, 870 River Road, 4:30-7 p.m. Adults $14, children 6-10 $6, and children 5 and under free. Royce Brook hosts GOP golf outing
   Fri., July 11 — The Hillsborough Republican Election Committee will hold a golf outing at Royce Brook Golf Club, 201 Hamilton Road. A donation of $200 gives greens feees, cart, beverage cart, lunch, dinner and one hour of popen bar with dinner. Credit cards accepted. 1 p.m. shotgun start.
