Children can learn about Impressionism this winter

Millstone Township Community Education is offering winter session classes in January and February.

Instructor Debra Stasiak, artist and certified teacher, will teach homeschoolers, ages 6-15, how to paint famous Impressionist masterpieces from Renoir: artist’s son, Jean, drawing (Jan. 17), and Van Gogh: Wheat Field with Cypresses (Jan. 24). Classes are held from 10:30-12:30 p.m. at the Millstone Township Community Center, 465 Stagecoach Road, Clarksburg. The cost is $22 per each two-hour session.

Mrs. Stasiak will also introduce young artists, ages 4-5, to Impressionism. Acrylic paints will be used, so old clothes are needed. The cost for the class is $10. “Monet Water Lily Pond” on Jan. 24 and runs from 1-2 p.m.

Horsemen’s Association open to new members

The Horsemen’s Association of Millstone Township will have its monthly meeting, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Community Center, Route 524 (Stagecoach Road), Millstone Township.

The group is open to both horse and nonhorse owners who would like to see horses remain a presence in our community. Membership is open to singles, couples and families. Activities include informational speakers, trail rides and group outings. At this meeting new officers will be installed and upcoming events will be discussed. Refreshments will be served. Local club to give tour of The Garden In Winter

Master Gardener Walter Cullerton will give a tour of “The Garden In Winter” at the Jan. 11 meeting of the Allentown Garden Club. Cullerton, a member of the American Hosta Society and past president of the Conifer Society, will show how to see and appreciate the garden in a new way via a slide presentation. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Allentown Methodist Church on Church Street (next to LaPiazza). The club meets the second Thursday of each month at the church. Beginners and experts alike from the surrounding area are invited to attend and welcome to join. Millstone Warriors to host ‘Comedy Night’

The Millstone Warriors will host “Comedy Night” at the Clarksburg Inn on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The night will feature two comedians, appetizers and a cash bar. The cost per person is $25. Call James Heely at (732) 333-4985.

Family friendly temple’s open house, Jan. 14

The Perrineville Jewish Center, Millstone Township’s family friendly temple at 855 Perrineville Road, will hold an open house for prospective new members on Sunday, Jan. 14, 9:30-11 a.m. in the center’s social hall.

Families can bring their Hebrew school age children to create a project and to meet other young members, the Rabbi and the school’s teachers. Hebrew school is a one day a week program for children ages 8-13. The school offers limited class sizes, students’ own Bar/Bat Mitzvah days, youth activities and Jewish culture programs. The center also offers adult education. Interfaith families are welcome at the chapel, which services Monmouth, Mercer and Middlesex counties. SRF needs boarding facilities in New Jersey

The Standardbred Retirement Foundation, Freehold is looking for affordable boarding facilities in New Jersey. A non-profit organization, SRF has made over 2,000 adoptions and currently supports and manages more than 120 horses, both useful and companion animals, the majority of which are in boarding facilities along the east coast. We are looking for caring, dedicated horse lovers who will assist us by providing affordable, temporary or long-term board for one or more of our horses. Roosevelt offers yoga again in the new year

The Roosevelt Recreation Department will again hold yoga classes from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Roosevelt Public School. Classes are instructed by Kym Kulp, a certified yoga instructor.

Yoga mats are provided, but participants can bring their own. The walk-in fee is $10 per class.

Free rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs

The Monmouth County Health Department will sponsor a free rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs, Jan. 20 from 1-2 p.m. at the Public Works Garage on Perrineville Road, Millstone.

Anyone who is a New Jersey resident may participate. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their cats as well as their dogs to the clinic.

All pets vaccinated at this clinic must receive a rabies booster shot, either in one or three years as stated on the certificate.

For all pets due in three years for a rabies booster, the New Jersey State Department of Health recommends that owners return instead, in two years to receive their pets rabies booster shot. This shortened time span between rabies shots will provide added protection against rabies exposures.

The Millstone Township Women’s Organization (MTWO) will be hosting a high rollin’, fun-filled “Casino Night,” on Friday, Jan. 26, from 7-11 p.m. at the Freehold Gardens. Photography workshop – systems and methods Jan. 19

The Allentown Art Guild will hold its next monthly meeting on Friday, Jan. 19, 7-9 p.m. at the barn studio of Jeff Martin Photography, 78 N. Main St., Allentown.

Whether the desired completed project is a personal photographic record of one’s own art or a portfolio that needs to be presented in a more professional manner, January’s guild workshop should not be missed.

Guild member Jeff Martin, commercial photographer for more than 30 years, will demonstrate how to set up an inexpensive, yet effective, lighting system for making photographic copies of artwork.

In the second half of the workshop, Martin will demonstrate the best method for cutting professional-looking mats.

Historic Walnford holds a celebration of winter

Historic Walnford is a photographer’s dream anytime of year (especially after a snowfall), a wonderful spot to watch winter birds, and always a great place to appreciate more than 200 years of social, industrial, and agriculture history. Area residents need not wait for an invitation to enjoy this beautiful site.

In January, Monmouth County Park System will offer free events, such as “Historic Hands-On Wallpaper Activity,” where participants can see and replicate historic wallpaper motifs, Jan. 20-21 from 2-3 p.m.

During “Groundhog Day,” Jan. 28 from 2-3 p.m., the facts and folklore surrounding this critter’s winter habits will be shared.

With the retreat of the groundhog, Valentine’s Day is soon to follow. Participants in the “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue,” event will enjoy a 19th century Valentine’s Day celebration, Feb. 10 from 1-4 p.m.

On February 18, from 3-4 p.m., “Destination Constellation” offers the opportunity for star gazing, lantern-making and learning about early astronomy.

SPCA searches for homes for dogs, cats and kittens

The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is seeking foster homes and permanent homes for dogs, cats and kittens. Fostering is approximately a two-month commitment.

The shelter also urges current pet owners to have their pets spayed/neutered. MCSPCA offers low-cost spay/neutering to the public.

AHS sports team offers chance to win prizes

See the Allentown High School Lady Redbird basketball team take on Ewing Friday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Allentown High School gym. All students are free with a paying adult and are invited to take part in a half-time free throwing contest for prizes. Everyone entering the gym that night will receive a ticket for a chance to win a sports package worth over $75.

‘N.J. Shouts Down Drugs’ music competition

The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey has announced its 2007 “New Jersey Shouts Down Drugs!” (NJSDD) music competition.

NJSDD is a music and song-writing competition for high school students who live or attend school in New Jersey. Students who participate must write a song promoting a substance abuse prevention message. As a culmination of the competition, a finalist from each of New Jersey’s 21 participating counties will perform in a statewide concert to be held May 17.

The statewide winners will share more than $10,000 in prizes including a music contract and having their song professionally recorded. All submissions must be received by Jan. 12 at 4 p.m.
