CRANBURY — A four-vehicle accident on the New Jersey Turnpike Saturday seriously injured a Maryland couple, according to police.
According to state police, the accident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes at mile marker 72.1 on July 19.
Police said the accident started after a motorcycle tried to slow down for traffic causing it to lock its rear wheel, causing the chain reaction crash.
"It was a four-car accident that occurred between a motorcycle and three other passenger cars," said New Jersey State Police Lt. Brian Polite. "The Harley Davidson went to stop for the slow of traffic and it looks like he may have locked his rear wheel and struck the rear of a Chevy Equinox."
Michael Murphy, 61, of Owings, Maryland was the driver of the Harley Davidson motorcycle and Helen Owings, 60, of Owings, Maryland was the rear passenger, according to police.
Mr. and Ms. Murphy were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with serious injuries, police said.
Lt. Polite said no one was trapped in the wreckage.
The northbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for approximately an hour, causing extensive delays, he said.
"It is still on going investigation," he said.
