EAST WINDSOR — Mayor Janice S. Mironov, along with the East Windsor Police Athletic League, celebrated the opening of the new East Windsor Township Disbrow Hill Playing Fields with an inaugural soccer game on Aug. 12.
The grant-funded project was undertaken by East Windsor Township to accommodate a growing need for more playing fields to support local organized youth sports programs, a press release from the mayor’s office said.
The soccer game was played between 11-year-old teams East Windsor P.A.L. Lightning and East Windsor P.A.L. Rockets.
"We are excited to open these new playing fields to the community and look forward to their use by our great local sports organizations, for hosting many sporting events and for active use by hundreds and hundreds of children in the years to come," Mayor Mironov said.
The new $1.2 million project includes two softball fields, two multi-purpose soccer/lacrosse playing fields, a new parking lot, a basin for drainage, and an irrigation system.
The new park facilities are centered on about 20 acres of a 59-acre township Green Acres open space acquisition, bordered by multiple other open space properties, the release said. In the past year the area has become home to the new Disbrow Hill Trail and township Community Garden just across the street from Disbrow Hill Road.
"This project represent a terrific community focal point for both active and passive recreation for residents of all ages and interests," Mayor Mironov said.
The grant was funded by Mercer County and the state, including funding from the county-sponsored Mercer at Play grant program established to provide municipalities with funding for construction or rehabilitation of active recreation facilities.
"We are grateful to Mercer County for their substantial funding resources provided through Mercer at Play and for assisting East Windsor in making this investment in our community’s parks and recreation," Mayor Mironov said.
