Looking for a Ford pickup truck? How about a Caterpillar backhoe? Maybe a portable tree stand for the deer hunter?
Why not a Motorola portable radio or a semi-automatic heart defibrillator — without batteries? Or perhaps a fax machine or a camcorder?
Those are among the items that will be sold to the public by Lawrence Township at its annual online auction of surplus equipment, which begins Aug. 18 and ends Aug. 25. Buyers can register to bid at www.govdeals.com.
The items, which include construction equipment, more than a dozen bicycles and an assortment of Motorola portable radios and accessories, are considered to be surplus and not needed by Lawrence Township, said Gregory Whitehead, the director of the township’s Public Works Department.
There are several Ford Crown Victoria sedans, a Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, a Chevrolet pickup truck, assorted computers and a radar enforcement trailer — formerly used by the Police Department — that are viewed as surplus equipment.
Lawrence Township has always held auctions to get rid of unneeded items, Mr. Whitehead said. In the past, "live" auctions were held at the Department of Public Works, but it was inefficient because it required staffers’ time to setup the auction.
That’s why Lawrence Township switched to online surplus auctions several years ago, Mr. Whitehead said. All of the surplus pieces can be viewed online, although it is a good idea to make arrangements to see some items in person.
