Kristen Forti, a 2012 graduate of Hillsborough High School, and a junior attending Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, will continue her environmental studies during the fall semester with the Institute for Shipboard Education.
Semester at Sea (SAS) is a study abroad program; the University of Virginia is the current academic sponsor. Semester at Sea is held on a cruise ship called the MV Explorer. Throughout the history of the program, nearly 55,000 undergraduate students from more than 1,500 colleges and universities have participated in Semester at Sea.
During the semester, the approximately 100-day program circumnavigates the globe, with up to 720 undergraduates traveling from North America heading across the Atlantic and embarking from London on Aug. 23. The ship will travel to 18 cities, 16 countries, three continents and will dock in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on Dec. 8.
Kristen will participate in field research in each country, in addition to onboard academic studies. She will be blogging for Towson University at kristeninwanderland.wordpress.com. To learn about the program, visit www.semesteratsea.org.
