MANVILLE: POW/MIA service moved to Thursday night

Thurs., Sept. 18
Memorial service: VFW Post 2290 and its ladies auxiliary has changed the date of its annual prisoner of war/missing in action service to tonight at 7 p.m. at the post, 600 Washington Ave. The public is encouraged to come out and remember those who have gone to war and not yet returned.
Fri., Sept. 19
Candidates event: The Manville Republican Club will hold a meet-and-greet with its candidates for Borough Council from 7 to 10 p.m. at the American Legion post at 429 S. Main St. Meet candidates Dayna Camacho and Steve Szabo.

Oktoberfest: Christ the Redeemer Parish will hold its Oktoberfest on Friday and Saturday. South 2nd Avenue and Filak Street will be closed for the event.

Barbecue: Manville-Hillsborough Elks 2215 and Red Knights Motorcycle Club will host an end-of-summer fireman appreciation picnic and barbecue, 1-5 p.m. Music by School of Rock, Somerville, $20 per person or $10 for 12 and younger, at 1500 Brooks Blvd., Hillsborough.

Meeting date moved: The Millstone-Raritan Rivers Flood Control Commission meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 24, has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. in Manville Borough Hall.
Fri., Oct. 3
Basket auction: St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 1900 Brooks Blvd., auction with more than 100 gift certificates and prizes, including flat-screen TV, outdoor grill, Kitchen Aid mixer, iPad, household items, appliances, theme baskets and a 50/50. Doors open at 5 p.m. Auction begins at 7. Tickets at $10 includes one sheet of tickets, desserts, coffee and tea. Food will be for sale. Slavic dinner: St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church holds monthly dinner, 4 to 7 p.m., St. Mary Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Blvd. $13 for adults (ages 9 and up) and $5 for children (8 and under).
