EAST AMWELL TWP.: Tour to visit historic taverns in Ringoes

The East Amwell Historical Society will lead a guided tour through downtown Ringoes on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The tour will cover more than 200 years of Ringoes history, from the arrival of the area’s first settlers to the 1930s. Learn about the town’s Colonial history and walk in the footsteps of the Sons of Liberty, who gathered at Ringo’s Tavern to debate independence, and the Marquis de Lafayette, who visited on multiple occasions during the American Revolution.
Learn about the impact of the railroad on the community and what the village looked like a century ago.
The tour will include stops at the Joseph Inslee Tavern, the home of Dr. Cornelius Larison and the Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church.
The society will offer morning and afternoon sessions (10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), starting in the parking lot behind the Clawson House.
Tickets cost $10 per person. Proceeds benefit the society’s efforts to preserve and share East Amwell’s history.
To register, email Pauline Seramba at [email protected] or call 908-797-9024.
Dave Harding, society member and author of a new booklet, "Exploring Ringoes: A Self-Guided Tour," will lead the tours. The booklet was released by the East Amwell Historic Preservation Committee.
Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 21. Light refreshments will be served in the Clawson Park gazebo following the tour. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
Sponsors for the walking tour are Rowe Electric Inc., Hopewell Valley Community Bank, Champion Tire, Rutgers Landscape & Nursery, Flemington Car & Truck Country and Orlando Family Dentistry.
The society also will present a Halloween program on ghost stories at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24.
"While we have yet to confirm a location, don’t fear, we won’t hold the event in a cemetery," said an announcement.
