FLORENCE — Sunday will be "Saint Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church’s 100th Anniversary Celebration Day" according to a proclamation issued by the mayor and council at their meeting on Oct. 1.
"Saint Nicholas’ history includes countless men and women who, for over 100 years, have been dedicated to their church and community," said Mayor Craig Wilkie as he read the proclamation.
The proclamation will be presented to Saint Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church family on Oct. 12 in commemoration of the church’s 100th anniversary.
"The parish members will be rejoicing on Oct. 12, 2014 the 100th Anniversary of their church by the celebration of Divine Liturgy and a banquet," he said. "The governing body of the Township of Florence joins in the excitement of this celebrated occasion by offering heartfelt congratulations and continued best wishes."
The church, located at 191 Norman Ave. in the village of Roebling, was incorporated Oct. 1, 1912.
"The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in a hall above the drug store on Main Street," he said. "On May 30, 1914 the cornerstone of the church was blessed."
He said that on June 20, 1945, the church was partially destroyed by a fire.
"In March 3, 1946 the church was re-dedicated to celebrate the restoration after the fire and in 2014 the interior was refurbished for the centennial celebration," he said.
