A backhoe operator struck a 2-inch natural gas main on Hardy Drive shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday, causing a natural gas leak, according to the Princeton Police Department.
Police officers, as well as the Princeton Fire Department and the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad responded to the gas leak, which was reported at 9:49 a.m. Public Service Gas & Electric Co. arrived at 9:55 a.m.
The natural gas main was struck by a backhoe operator who was digging to plant trees in a cul-de-sac area at the end of Hardy Drive. No one was at home in the surrounding residences, and there was no damage to the houses, police said.
There were no reported injuries.
The gas main leak was reported safe and under control by Public Service Gas & Electric at 10:37 a.m. Police blocked off the area to traffic until the gas leak was corrected, and until the emergency vehicles and Public Service Gas & Electric left the scene.
