METUCHEN — Students at the borough’s Edgar Middle School didn’t just watch the Olympics; they took part in their own version of the games, in a way that sought to make learning fun.
Over the last three weeks, fifth-grade students at the school competed in the Math Olympics. Classes throughout the fifth grade took part in math-themed events such as cotton ball shot put, paper plate discus and javelin straw throw, just to name a few.
All events involved metric measurements, with students calculating and converting meters, centimeters and grams.
Each fifth-grade class held competitions, and the winners qualified for the medal round.
The “mathletes” marched in to the Olympic theme song, carrying the flag of their math class as audience members cheered on their respective classmates. The finalists then competed to win gold, silver and bronze medals.
