This summer Mater Dei Prep will offer many different opportunities for campers to improve their essential sports skills. In June, MDP hosts the Mater Dei Prep Youth Football Camp for grades five through eight. This camp teaches the fundamentals of football and the basic skills required for playing the game at the high school level. The camp offers individualized instruction from many area high school coaches, including Mater Dei Prep head coach Shannon Hoadley. For three weeks in July and August, Mater Dei Prep boys’ basketball head coach Ben Gamble teaches the fundamentals of the sport: passing, ball-handling, defense, rebounding and shooting. This camp is open to students entering grades four through eight. Coach Ben Gamble has an extensive background in coaching. This year he has led MDP to the top of the Shore Conference. He was the associated head coach at national powerhouse St. Anthony High School in Jersey City for 14 years. Coach Gamble played for and developed his coaching skills from his mentor, hall of fame head coach Bob Hurley. Also in July, MDP girls’ basketball head coach Brian Laux manages the Game 7 Basketball Camp for students entering grades two through eight. Players are drilled in the physical and mental fundamentals of basketball while focusing on building the new skills necessary for success on the court.
