Fans of all ages will soon have the opportunity to be transported to “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” when the Woodbridge Township Family Series presents its “Star Wars Spectacular.”
The event, which will take place April 7 from 3-6 p.m. at the Woodbridge Community Center, 600 Main St., promises something for every “Star Wars” fan.
“With the positive response we’ve been getting, I think it’s going to be really big because it’s the first of its kind in this area,” Niven Raghib, the township’s recreation programs specialist, said.
Raghib organized the event with Kelly Reidy, a staff member in Mayor John Mc- Cormac’s office. It is one of several events scheduled for April, which Woodbridge has designated as “Youth Month.” However, Raghib said, the “Star Wars Spectacular” is not just for youngsters.
“When we were giving out the fliers, a lot of adults were interested in coming as well,” she said. “The unique thing about this event is that it’s not just for a certain age.”
Lightsaber training, video game demonstrations, temporary tattoos, and a stand at which attendees can decorate their own “Star Wars” cookie for free are among the activities slated for the afternoon event. In addition, toys, memorabilia, comic books and video games related to the film series will be displayed and sold by vendors. Collectible items related to the George Lucas saga will be raffled off to lucky winners.
“There are also going to be lots of ‘Star Wars’ characters walking around,” Raghib said.
The characters are actors from a company called Characters for Hire, and are more than just costumed look-alikes, Raghib said. “If you ask them any ‘Star Wars’-related questions, they will give you the answer,” she said.
Thanks to Walgreens, an event sponsor, each attendee will receive a complimentary photo with the character of his or her choice.
If that is not enough up-close-andpersonal time with the characters, fans can visit different areas of the community center to partake in activities with their favorite character. For example, roller-skating and golf will be two of the available options.
In encouraging fans to fully immerse themselves in the “Star Wars” experience, the organizers have invited all attendees to come in costume. To keep the force going strong, refreshments will also be available.
