Youngsters invited to Junior Police Academy

The South River Police Department and the South River Municipal Alliance will host their ninth annual Junior Police Academy 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, July 12-21, at South River Middle School, 3 Montgomery St.

The academy is open to all South River residents who are scheduled to attend sixth, seventh or eighth grade in the fall.

Participants will learn what it is like to be a police officer. Students will meet the officers, talk on a police radio, learn criminal and motor-vehicle laws, investigate a crime scene, collect evidence, conduct motor-vehicle stops, see the inside of a real jail and more. The seven-day academy, which will be taught by South River police officers, has previously included visits to the New Jersey State Police Museum, a working criminal laboratory and a police academy.

Applications are available 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays at South River police headquarters, 61 Main St. For more information, call Diane Nale at 732-257-6727, ext. 102.

Cadets will be chosen on a first-come basis; class size is limited to 25. Returning cadets will not automatically receive preference over new applicants.

All applications must be returned prior to June 22.
