Sayreville American Legion Lenape Post 211, Honor Guard, will be conducting a military memorial ceremony in honor of Corporal Frank Wieczorkowski at 7 p.m. on Aug. 4 at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Washington Avenue, South Amboy.
Wieczorkowski was mortally wounded on the battlefields of France while fighting in The Second Battle of the Marne. His final resting place has gone unmarked. Finally, after numerous attempts and many years of red tape, a veteran’s grave marker was obtained from the Veteran’s Administration and will be placed at his final resting place. A full military burial service will be conducted with the placing of the military grave marker and will include a 21-gun salute followed by the playing of taps.
The date of Aug. 4 is significant and was selected because it was exactly 98 years to the day in 1918 that Wieczorkowski was mortally wounded and succumbed to those wounds on Aug. 5, 1918.
