Summer road races continue on while the signs of autumn are upon us as scrimmages in football and soccer are on the schedule of sporting events that you should not miss this coming week.
Runners will take over the streets of Asbury Park on Aug. 13 for the annual Asbury Park George Sheehan 5K Classic that begins at 8:30 a.m.
The race starts on 5th Avenue and concludes on Ocean Avenue.
Kids Races will follow the 5K starting at 9:45 a.m.
The Sheehan Clssic is part of the four-race Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix Series. The final race of the series is the Pier House 5K in Long Branch on Sept. 5.
It’s not to early to get a peek at the upcoming high school football season with scrimmages popping up in the area.
On Aug. 16, Bishop Ahr of Edison is playing Colonia at Colonia High School at 10 a.m.
Ocean Township travels to Hazlet to take on last year’s NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group II state playoff champion, Raritan, at 10 a.m.
Monmouth University’s men’s soccer team, ranked No. 30 in national pre-season polls, takes a ride up Route 18 to take on in-state rival Rutgers in a pre-season scrimmage in Piscataway on Aug. 13.
The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start on the Scarlet Knights’ pitch.
Monmouth’s women’s soccer team is the pre-season pick to win the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in 2016. The Hawks open their pre-season at home in West Long Branch on Aug. 12 when they play as the host to St. Joseph’s of Philadelphia under the lights at 7 on the Great Lawn.
On Aug. 15, Villanova visits Monmouth for a women’s soccer scrimmage at 7 p.m.
