Performers of the Week

The scholastic sport season is up and running and these are some of the outstanding performances from the just completed opening week of the fall campaign.

Old Bridge High School kicker Jon Sammarco helped the Knights gain a measure of revenge on South Brunswick in the Sept. 9 season-opening football game for both teams.

Sammarco’s 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was difference as the Knights beat the Vikings, 31-28, in a Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division game in Monmouth Junction.

South Brunswick beat Old Bridge in the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group V championship playoff game last year.

 

Anthony Lotti accounted for 215 total yards from scrimmage, 97 rushing and 118 pass receiving, to guide Freehold Township High School past its cross-town rival, Freehold, 16-12. Lotti and Patriot quarterback Charles Sabbagh connected on the game-winning 75-yard touchdown pass in the final 4:00 of the game as the Patriots completed their comeback from a 12-0 deficit in the first period.

Sabbagh completed 20 of his 34 passes for 290 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

 

Manalapan High School quarterback Luke Corcione averaged 30-plus yards per throw when he completed nine of his 13 passes for 279 yards in the Braves’ 49-12 victory over Marlboro.

 

Eddie Morales completed 15 of his 22 passes for 238 and three touchdowns as the Howell High School tam opened its  football season with a 35-13 triumph over Colts Neck.

Allentown High School’s Colin Roy recorded four quarterback sacks when the Redbirds defeated West Windsor-Plainsboro North, 49-13, to even their record to 1-1.

The game was the home opener for the Allentown football team.

 

Michael Liberti ran for 227 yards and two touchdowns in Sayreville’s 46-18 victory over East Brunswick in Parlin.

 

Makenna Maguire was responsible for both goals when Rumson-Fair Haven’s field hockey team defeated Shore Regional, 2-0, in West Long Branch. Maguire had a goal and an assist in the game between state-ranked powers.

Middletown North’s Hailee Hallard had three goals and an assist in the Lions’ 7-0 decision over St. John Vianney in field hockey.

The Lions are off to a 3-0 start and Hallard has seven goals and two assists in those games.

 

Lindsay Szucs had 20 assists for the South Brunswick girl’s volleyball team when the Vikings defeated North Brunswick in straight sets, 25-22, 25-9.

 

The cross-country season is underway and Freehold Township High School’s Nick Ackerman won the Junior Class race at the Cherokee Challenge in Marlton.

Ackerman posted a winning time of 10:12.90 on the 3,200-meter course.
