EDISON — Two 11-year-old girls suffered multiple injuries, including broken bones, after getting hit by a motor vehicle after they allegedly darted across New Dover Road near Lawlor Court.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Sept. 29, according to police.

According to police, witnesses told investigating Officer Salvatore Cipolla that the two girls — one from Edison, the other from Metuchen — darted across New Dover Road near Lawlor Court and into the path of an oncoming Audi driven by a 78-year-old Metuchen man.

The girls sustained multiple injuries, including broken bones, and were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment, police said.

The driver was not injured and will not be charged in connection with the accident, police said.

A crossing guard was present at the nearby New Dover Road and Floyd Street crosswalk, but the youngsters had allegedly crossed the busy street well before reaching that crosswalk, police said.
