Julie Otsuka, author of the award-winning 2002 novel “When the Emperor Was Divine,” will hold an interactive presentation at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft on Nov. 17. The event is a part of the 2016 Brookdale Read initiative.
Otsuka, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Asian American Literary Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a finalist for the National Book Award, will host a lecture, Q&A and book signing, beginning at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17, at 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft.
Community members of all ages are invited. General admission is $5. Parking is in lots 6 and 7. For more information, call 732-224-2788 or visit www.chhange.org. Local schools interested in organizing a class trip are encouraged to call for special rates.
Otsuka’s novel, which follows one family’s experiences in Japanese internment camps during World War II, is the centerpiece of this year’s Brookdale Read, an annual initiative designed to spur community-wide discussion on significant social issues.
Brookdale students, faculty and community members, are encouraged to read the novel and participate in a series of free film screenings, panel discussions, guest lectures and other events offered throughout Nov. For a full list of upcoming events, visit www.chhange.org.
The Brookdale Read is co-hosted by the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education (Chhange); Brookdale’s International Education Center, Office of Student Life and Activities and Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution; and the Middletown Township Public Library.
