MONROE – American Legion Post 522 has many events planned for the spring.
In May, members will hold interviews with high school juniors to select delegates and alternates to attend the American Legion Boys State at Ryder College in late June. The Boys State event teaches young men how the government operates by having them run their own city.
The post will also hold its annual poppy drive at locations in Monroe and East Windsor. All funds collected are donated to various accredited veterans facilities and organizations, including the Lyons VA Hospital, Veterans Haven North, the N.J. State Veterans Memorial Home in Edison and the Fischer House, according to post Commander Nicholas Ferrarotto.
Over the past few months, Post 522 had been busy as well. In December, members participated in a sendoff celebration for the Monroe Township High School Marching Band, which traveled to Hawaii for a commemoration of the 75th attack on Pearl Harbor.
They also sponsored the 79th Annual American Legion Oratorical competition in December for four students from Monroe Township High School. The winner of the post competition was sophomore Ria Patel, who went went on to win the Middlesex County Legion Oratorical Competition on Feb. 4 and to compete in the regional competition on March 4.
