Allentown receives funding for streetscape

ALLENTOWN – The borough has been selected to receive $235,000 in funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Fiscal Year 2017 municipal aid program for its streetscape improvement project, Phase II, Church Street, North Main Street and the Church Street parking lot.

The DOT’s municipal aid program is very competitive, with 628 applications received this year requesting more than $270 million, according to a press release from Allentown. There is $78.75 million available in funds from the Transportation Trust Fund.

The project was submitted by Roberts Engineering Group, Hamilton. The firm has submitted additional municipal aid and grant applications on Allentown’s behalf for this project, according to the press release.

In commenting on the news of the award, Mayor Greg Westfall said, “Late last year and early this year, the borough applied for funding through the transportation alternatives and local municipal aid programs at the DOT, respectively.

“The approved funding for $235,000 is from the local municipal aid program and would cover a portion of the estimated cost of $998,780 for pedestrian safety improvements on Church Street, including the Church Street parking lot, and North Main Street to the borough limits.

“Funding for these improvements will improve accessibility for our residents and visitors to our business district, as well as to the public library, post office, parks and recreational facilities,” the mayor said.
