Freehold Township school counselor honored

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – A counselor from the Freehold Township K-8 School District has been named the Monmouth County Counselor of the Year.

Courtney Colford, a counselor at the Barkalow Middle School, was honored by the New Jersey School Counselor Association (NJSCA) as the 2016-17 Counselor of the Year for Monmouth County.

According to a press release from the NJSCA, school counselors are nominated by their colleagues and selected by their own county’s school counselor associations for the award.

According to a biography from the Monmouth County School Counselor Association, Colford has worked as a counselor at Barkalow for 10 years. In addition to her work as a counselor, she serves as the school district’s Student Assistance Coordinator.

Colford also serves on the Youth and Education Committee for the Freehold Municipal Alliance and is a member of the Traumatic Loss Coalition of Monmouth County.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be recognized as the Monmouth County School Counselor of the Year,” Colford said. “Barkalow is my second home and after 10 years I am still so fortunate to say that I love what I do and work in a school with incredibly supportive administrators, talented and dedicated staff and amazing students who challenge and inspire me daily.

“This award would not be possible without all of them. I hope to continue to inspire and support students for many more years to come,” she said.
