Scholar, swimmers honored during North Brunswick council meeting

NORTH BRUNSWICK – North Brunswick celebrated the talent of some of its young residents during a recent council meeting.

Ipsika Kumar was selected as the Scholar Athlete Artist of the Month for August, presented by the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services.

Ipsika is a junior at North Brunswick Township High School, where her favorites subjects as an honor roll student are science and math.

She is the vice president of the Key Club; has tutored at a local elementary school; and helps organize events such as the Key Club Carnival, events for children with autism and other mental and physical restraints and Read Across America, according to the proclamation read in her honor at the Aug. 7 North Brunswick Township Council meeting.

She was named co-captain of the junior varsity/varsity tennis team for the high school.

Ipsika also volunteers at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick as a patient representative and at the local library, organizing books and reading to younger children.

She also created 100 care packages for the homeless, which include water, a meal, clothing and a first aid kit, using her own money, according to the proclamation.

Also during the council meeting, the North Brunswick Rapids Swim Team was recognized for a very successful season.

The team placed second overall in the New Jersey Swimming and Diving Conference in July, and placed third in a championship event hosted at NBTHS.
