School districts renew agreement

The Freehold Borough K-8 School District Board of Education and the Freehold Township K-8 School District Board of Education have agreed on a deal that will allow the Freehold Borough board to continue renting classrooms provided by Freehold Township.

Under terms of the agreement, pupils from Freehold Borough will continue to be taught by Freehold Borough employees in space that Freehold Township makes available.

On Sept. 11, the Freehold Borough board approved an agreement between the two districts that calls for Freehold Borough to rent nine classrooms in Freehold Township at a cost of $110,806.

The Freehold Township board approved a shared service agreement for the rental of classroom space at a meeting on Aug. 29. The agreement is effective from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018.

Of the nine classrooms being rented by Freehold Borough, six are for kindergarten pupils and three are for pre-kindergarten pupils.

Four rented kindergarten classrooms are in the West Freehold School; two rented kindergarten classrooms and one rented pre-kindergarten classroom are in the Marshall W. Errickson Elementary School; and two rented pre-kindergarten classrooms are in the Joseph J. Catena Elementary School.

Freehold Township provides transportation for the Freehold Borough children and custodial services for the rented classrooms, according to the Freehold Township board.

Additionally, Freehold Township provides a lunch period and related arts instruction for the Freehold Borough pupils in the West Freehold and Errickson schools.

According to Freehold Borough, the related arts include foreign language, physical education, music, media instruction and fine arts.

Freehold Borough will pay $18,000 annually and for that payment, Freehold Township will provide the Freehold Borough children with access to nurses at the West Freehold, Errickson and Catena schools, according to the Freehold Borough board.

Freehold Borough rents classrooms in Freehold Township because it enrolls more pupils than it can accommodate in its three schools. Freehold Borough also rents one pre-kindergarten classroom at the First Baptist Church of Freehold in the borough.

Approximately 150 Freehold Borough students will attend class in Freehold Township or at the church. Those children are considered to be in-district pupils.
