Mayor offers support for school project

As you may be aware, the Marlboro K-8 School District will be holding a special election on Sept. 26 on the question of financing improvements to aging school infrastructure. The district’s proposal includes roofing, window replacement and heating and ventilation work, and also incorporates school security enhancements which are of the utmost importance in these challenging times.

I am a lifelong Marlboro resident who attended the Defino school and Marlboro Middle School. I am also the proud father of three children who have benefited from a first class Marlboro education. As mayor, I can tell you with certainty that the quality of our schools is an important factor in the decision of families to locate here, and unquestionably gives Marlboro a competitive edge when it comes to local economic development.

I will note that I did not support the past two school district proposals which were voted down in 2015 and 2016, nor have I ever weighed in publicly on a school district referendum. This time, however, I believe the district has the right plan.

The proposal focuses on what is truly needed at a time when taxpayers will benefit from low interest costs, significant state subsidies and a school budget that can absorb critical infrastructure improvements without a tax increase. For these reasons, this time I will be voting yes. I hope you will join me in supporting the public question on Sept. 26.
