FREEHOLD – At Sabbath services on Nov. 11, the Freehold Jewish Center, Congregation Agudath Achim, will honor Marcy Cortez. The Saturday morning services will be followed with a celebration in her honor.
Cortez has served the Freehold Jewish Center for many years and in many capacities, beginning with the Hebrew school and moving up to the synagogue’s presidency. She joined the Board of Trustees, became an officer and was elected to the presidency in 2006, according to a press release.
While serving as president, Cortez worked on the expense structure of the synagogue and put the organization on a sound financial basis, according to the press release.
Following her terms as president, Cortez returned to the Board of Trustees and served as treasurer, as well as co-chair of the Social Committee, the group that organized and staged many events, including gala celebrations for the synagogue’s 95th, 100th and 105th anniversaries.
Cortez’s husband of 29 years, Bruce, has also served the synagogue in many capacities. He continues to serve on the Bingo committee, an important financial source to the congregation.
Cortez’s roots extend to Union, belonging to a traditional synagogue, Temple Israel, where her parents were active in the Men’s Club and Sisterhood. She and her husband are the parents of three adult daughters, Ilana, Amanda and Lisa.
Cortez is a graduate of the University of Bridgeport. She has a background in corporate business and operates an accounting and bookkeeping practice, according to the press release.
