Freehold educators will update language arts, math curriculum

FREEHOLD – The Freehold Borough K-8 School District Board of Education has named staff members to work on two curriculum writing projects.

On Feb. 20, board members approved staff members for an English language arts curriculum project and a math curriculum project. Each staff member who serves as a curriculum writer will be paid $35 an hour.

The projects were approved by the board in January. The English language arts curriculum project will have different objectives for pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade and for students in grades six through eight. There will be one math curriculum project for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Danielle Fekete, Nicolina Harker, Amanda Simonelli and Rose Van Clef will serve as writers for the K-5 English language arts curriculum project and Fekete, Harker and Simonelli will serve as writers for the math curriculum project on the K-5 level.

The writers for the sixth through eighth grade English language arts curriculum project will be Kathleen Lane, Jennifer Michal and Jacqueline Tur. For the math curriculum project on the sixth through eighth grade level, Maka Azrumelashvili, Heidi Brache, Anne Marie Fasano and Debra Moore-Asay will serve as curriculum writers.

For pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade, the English language arts curriculum project will incorporate fundamental units from educational company Schoolwide: launching writers workshop, narrative unit, informational unit, opinion unit and a grammar unit for writing. The project will also incorporate a poetry unit for reading, according to district administrators.

For students in grades six through eight, the English language arts curriculum project will review and edit the district’s curriculum to reflect current New Jersey Student Learning Standards in English language arts, with a review and edits if needed to its pacing guide, materials and resources, and interdisciplinary connections, according to district administrators.

The cost of the English language arts curriculum project for kindergarten through fifth grade is not to exceed $6,300 and the cost of the project for sixth through eighth grade is not to exceed $1,050, according to district administrators.

The math curriculum project will review and edit the district’s curriculum to reflect current New Jersey Student Learning Standards in mathematics, with a review and edits if needed to its pacing guide, materials and resources, and interdisciplinary connections.  The cost of the project for kindergarten through grade five is not to exceed $2,334 and the cost of the project for sixth through eighth grade is not to exceed $1,166.
