Edison girls’ basketball turns focus to state tournament

The Edison High School girls’ basketball team is now targeting the state tournament.

The Eagles will bid to win the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 tournament after they fell one victory short of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship.

Edison was defeated by Piscataway Township High School, 51-37, in the GMC title game that was played at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway on Feb. 22.

Edison was led by junior guard Samira Sargent, who registered 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles visited Middletown High School South in the first round of the Central Jersey, Group 4 sectional playoffs on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. A victory would have sent the Eagles to the next round on March 1 against the winner of Colts Neck High School and Long Branch High School.

The Eagles fell to Westfield High School, 55-51, in the quarterfinals of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 state tournament last year.
