Police: Phone scam seeks money for ‘jailed grandson’

EDISON — Police warned that a new scam may be targeting grandmothers.

Police Lt. Sal Filannino said a 64-yearold female resident received a phone call from an unknown male saying that he was her grandson. The caller reportedly said he had been arrested and jailed, and needed bail money to be sent to be him.

The victim said she told the caller that he did not sound like her grandson.

“The male told the victim that he had a sinus infection,” said Filannino. “Then the victim hung up before the call went on. The victim got in touch with her grandson and realized that the unknown male was not her grandson.”

Filannino said this was the first time that this type of scam was reported.

“We have had several different phone scams dealing with sweepstake winnings,” he noted.

Police in neighboring Metuchen have received reports of six similar types of phone scams. The most recent incident was reported on April 29.
