Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato has announced the arrest of Sandra Denise Brown, 46, of Jackson, in connection with a hit-and-run incident in Lakewood that resulted in the death of a Lakewood man.
Coronato said Brown has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death.
On Dec. 25 at 7:42 p.m., Lakewood Police Department officers were dispatched to Cedar Bridge Road just west of Martin Luther King Drive to investigate an incident in which a pedestrian had been struck in the road, Coronato said.
The pedestrian was later identified as Roger Conover, 45, of Lakewood. He was treated at the scene for what were described as severe head injuries and transported to Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, Lakewood, where he was pronounced dead.
Coronato said it was reported that the driver of the vehicle which struck Conover fled the scene.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Fatal Accident Investigations and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI responded to the scene.
Coronato said that while the scene was being processed, it was reported that Patrolman Alexander Guzman had located the suspect vehicle on John Street, just off Martin Luther King Drive.
The vehicle, a 1997 Nissan Maxima, had damage to the front driver side windshield area and physical evidence indicating a recent pedestrian strike. Coronato said an investigation determined Brown was allegedly the driver of the vehicle at the time Conover was struck.
At the conclusion of the investigation, prosecutor’s office Detective Brant Uricks contacted Brown and asked her to surrender herself to answer the charge. Coronato said Brown did not comply with that request.
On June 11 at 6:30 a.m., members of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Warrants Unit and the U.S. Marshal Service located and arrested Brown in Seaside Heights. She is currently lodged in the Ocean County Jail, according to the prosecutor.
