Girl Scout pushes for tire pumps at North Brunswick Community Park

NORTH BRUNSWICK – North Brunswick Township High School freshman Dior Whitfield has fulfilled her mission of adding motorized vehicle and bicycle air pumps to North Brunswick Community Park.

Dior conducted the project independently, requiring hours of research, discussions and interviews with numerous air pump manufacturers, securing pricing and installation, interviewing gas station owners, conducting workshops, and presenting information for approval and financing to the Township Council, mayor’s office and the Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services, according to information provided by the township. She was recently presented with a proclamation from Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack and the Township Council, honoring her for receiving her Girl Scout Silver Award.

Dior had initially petitioned the North Brunswick Township Council last September to help her secure two vehicle and bicycle air pumps for the park.

“Community Park needs these stations as amenities [as] the park has high volume traffic for recreational sports such as baseball, soccer and cricket,” Dior had said. “Families having picnics, daily cycling, 5K running events, rollerskating and just exercising in general – with all these activities means there are a lot of vehicles and bicycles going in and out of the park.”

The Troop 17902 cadet said the air pumping stations would be located at the Route 130 and Adams Lane entrances to help anyone who may find themselves with a flat tire.

“My project will be a benefit to all in the community, preventing people from A. being stranded in the park due to a flat tire and B. the person does not have to stop the activity they’re doing,” she had said.

Dior has been a member of the Girl Scouts of America since she was five years old. As a Daisy, Brownie and currently a Girl Scout, she has received numerous honors and badges of merit for her volunteering services, leadership abilities and positive qualities, according to the statement.
