EAST BRUNSWICK – Providing assistance in subjects ranging from algebra to chemistry, the East Brunswick Public Library is offering a free online tutoring service to its patrons.
“Tutor.com provides our patrons with access to live, online tutoring for grades kindergarten through 12, as well as college students and adult learners. The service connects our patrons with a trained professional academic tutor through the Princeton Review, giving them homework help, studying assistance and even essay reviews,” said Karen Parry, the library’s manager of information services.
Parry said patrons may send in an essay to have a tutor review it, or work with a tutor on science or math problems, ranging from elementary school through advanced placement (AP) subjects and even SAT preparations. This helps parents find tutors for their children in every subject, including algebra, statistics, English, social sciences, physics and chemistry.
“Our staff is always asked for advice or recommendations by parents on how to find affordable tutoring for their children,” Parry said. “Now that we offer Tutor.com, we can provide them with a tutoring service for pretty much any class, free of charge, with their library card.”
Parry said the library launched the service in September 2017. There have been several updates this year to Tutor.com that patrons have found useful, specifically the expanded career services.
The service is available over the internet, so Tutor.com can be used anywhere a library cardholder is online, Parry said.
“[Patrons] can even use it at the library, either in our computer labs or over the building’s WiFi connection. Library users can sign up for Tutor.com by going to our website and looking in the Online Databases section,” she said. “If they have any questions, they can ask the librarians at our information desk or children’s desk.”
Parry said library patrons can have five online tutoring sessions each week, from 3-10 p.m.
“Outside of academic tutoring, Tutor.com offers several training programs for adults, including resume writing and cover letter writing, financial literacy, passing the GED and even citizenship test preparation,” she said.
