Jackson Police Beat, Dec. 26

The Jackson Police Department reported the following incidents that occurred in the municipality:

• Three police officers sustained what were described as minor injuries as they attempted to restrain a suicidal teenager. Police said that at 1:33 a.m. Dec. 14, officers Chris Schinder, Shannon Foote and Joe Pante responded to a Jackson residence to investigate a report of a teenage male who had reportedly threatened suicide with a knife. The officers observed a family member who had reportedly sustained a cut to a hand while trying to take the knife from the teenager. The officers spoke with the teenager about going to a hospital for assistance, but the youth grew increasingly agitated and attempted to strike the officers as they moved closer. The teenager was handcuffed after a struggle and taken to an ambulance. Police said the youth attempted to bite the officers and spat at them. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Each officer was treated for injuries sustained in the incident. Police said juvenile complaints are pending against the teenager.

• At 12:47 a.m. Dec. 14, officers Matthew Buono and Wes Thomason responded to a residence on New Central Avenue to investigate a report of a 39-year-old male who had overdosed on drugs. First aid personnel transported the man to a hospital for treatment. Police said items consistent with heroin use were seized for destruction. No charges are pending as per the Overdose Prevention Act.

• At 1:44 a.m. Dec. 16, officers Michael Goelz and Jody Benecke responded to Cassville Road near Reed Road to investigate a report of a male who appeared to be passed out behind the wheel of his car. The officers found the vehicle parked at the roadside, running, with the man asleep at the wheel. Police said the driver was awakened and opened the door, but not before stepping on the accelerator and revving the engine as the officers instructed him to turn off the car. The 19-year-old male was charged with driving while intoxicated and released to a family member.
