EDISON — Police are searching for the person responsible for the fatal shooting of a gas station clerk at a Speedway gas station in Edison in the early morning hours of Dec. 20.
The suspect, whose identity is unknown at this time, is described as a male of slight build wearing light colored pants, possibly jeans, a maroon colored hooded sweatshirt, a mask and gloves, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan.
Police responded to Speedway, 789 Amboy Ave., at 4:02 a.m. and found 38-year-old John Bertram of the Fords section of Woodbridge. Bertram was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:15 a.m., according to the statement.
A preliminary investigation has revealed the suspect entered the gas station and held up the clerk with a handgun. Bertram reportedly handed the cash register drawer containing currency to the suspect, after which the suspect allegedly fired one shot, apparently killing Bertram, according to officials.
Results of how Bertram was killed are pending from the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the statement.
