Looking to bounce back from a defeat the previous week against Cherokee High School, the Bordentown Regional High School boys’ basketball team couldn’t find its stride in an early-season matchup at Westampton Tech on Dec. 21.
The Scotties fell in that game, 88-67, that was played on Dec. 21 in Westampton Township.
As the Scotties fell behind early on in the game, they had their work cut out for them to stop Westampton’s Jaedan Sheehan, who put up 28 points in the game, including six three-pointers.
Although it was back-to-back losses against non-conference opponents this season, the Scotties record fell to 1-2, but they will look to remain unbeaten against Burlington County Scholastic League Patriot Division (BCSLPD) opponents having defeated Cinnaminson on Dec. 14 by a score of 64-55, and will face Delran on Jan. 3.
Bordentown’s Roshon Vankline led the scoring in the loss to Westampton Tech with 12 points.
Gavin Shiver, Logan Saranin and Armaan Gil also combined for another 30 total points in the defeat.
At the end of the second period, the Scotties found themselves down, 55-29, but Bordentown delivered a strong fourth period when outscored the host team, 22-13.
Bordentown coach John Myers accredited his team’s late-game efforts to the unity of his players.
“Our second-half performance, being down as much as we were – when you play a half like the way they played, it tells you all about their character,” Myers said. “Sometimes days don’t go your way, but it’s what you do when they don’t, and they fought back in that second half. I give them all the credit in the world in that regard.”
Although the Scotties played from behind since the opening tip-off, Myers said the team understands that there are still aspects of their game to work on, which they can build upon against upcoming opponents.
“We’re building on commitment. We need everybody,” Myers said. “Everybody matters on the team. Our team is really good, and they recognize the fact that they need each other to be successful, and I saw that at the end (of the game).”
The coach is looking for his squad to play hard through four quarters.
“I want them to come out (next week) and show the character that they showed in the third and fourth quarter in this game,” he said.
