The New Jersey State Parole Board has announced the promotion of Director Steven Tallard to executive director. Tallard, who is a resident of Howell, will guide the agency’s day-to-day operations.
Tallard will oversee duties that include managing an agency with 197 civilian staff and 384 sworn parole officers and commanders who are all charged with processing and supervising more than 15,000 former inmates on parole, according to a press release.
New Jersey State Parole Chairman Samuel J. Plumeri Jr. said, “This agency is extremely fortunate and proud to have Director Tallard serve as a leader of the New Jersey State Parole Board because of his professionalism, experience and intimate knowledge of parole supervision and law enforcement.”
Tallard was named executive director following an interim period in which he served in that role beginning in January 2018. While handling the duties as acting executive director, he continued as director of the Division of Parole.
In addition to his other duties, Tallard also oversees the Division of Release, Human Resources, Information Technology, Fiscal and Legal units within the agency.
Tallard previously served as one of the principal sex offender supervision specialists for the New Jersey State Parole Board. He led the creation of the agency’s Sex Offender Management Unit, which became operational in March 2005. This program manages approximately 7,000 registered sex offenders, according to the press release.
Tallard is a 2008 graduate of the FBI National Academy and was the first New Jersey parole officer accepted into the academy.
