Old Bridge man charged with reckless driving in wake of fatal accident

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – An Old Bridge resident has been charged with reckless driving following his involvement in a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Jan. 16 in Freehold Township.

Asked for an update on Feb. 27, Christopher Swendeman, a spokesman for Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni, said Derrick T. Gyengo, 33, of Old Bridge, has been charged with reckless driving.

Swendeman said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash is continuing. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Freehold Township Police Department and the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team are investigating the crash.

In previous accounts of the collision, the prosecutor’s office said Gyengo was driving north on Route 9 in a 2009 Honda Accord just before 1 p.m. Jan. 16 when he collided at the intersection of Route 9, Craig Road and East Freehold Road with a 2013 Lexus.

The Lexus was being driven by John Scranton Jr., 59, of Howell. Authorities said Scranton was turning left from East Freehold Road onto Route 9 south.

After striking the Lexus, Gyengo’s Honda continued northbound on Route 9 and struck a 2003 Toyota Camry. The Camry was being driven by Patricia Limone, 76, of Lakewood, and the passenger in the front seat was her husband, James Limone, 78.

Authorities said Limone was driving through the intersection, crossing Route 9 from East Freehold Road to Craig Road.

Patricia Limone was transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, where she was pronounced dead at 2:09 p.m., according to the prosecutor’s office.

James Limone was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

Gyengo, Scranton and a male passenger in Scranton’s vehicle were not injured in the collision, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The intersection of Route 9, Craig Road and East Freehold Road is the border of Freehold Township and Manalapan.
