Freehold High School will honor its newest inductees into the Freehold High School Hall of Fame in a celebration to be held at 6 p.m. May 9 at the American Hotel, Freehold. The honorees are artist, teacher and philanthropist Mary-Elaine Smith Tashjian, Class of 1955 (posthumously); baseball athlete Bruce Carney, Class of 1971; soccer athlete Patrick Preston, Class of 1985; and football and track athlete Jason Mumford, Class of 1991.

New Jersey Israel Bonds and the Marlboro Jewish Center will honor Joel and Stephanie Markel at a Tribute Brunch on April 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the synagogue. The special guest performer will be mentalist Oz Pearlman, who was a finalist on “America’s Got Talent.”

As proud Jewish Americans, Joel and Stephanie believe the establishment of Israel protects the existence of the entire Jewish people. Lilly Markel, the Markel family matriarch and a
survivor of Auschwitz who lost all of her family, serves as a constant reminder, according to a press release.

The Markels have instilled their love for Israel and its people to their entire family, according to the press release.

Joel, the founder and executive producer of Ottimo Films, created “Oro Macht Frei” (“Gold Will Set You Free”), a 70-minute documentary that tells the story of the Roman Jewish experience during the Nazi occupation of Rome from September 1943 through June 1944.

Acelero Learning Head Start is holding open enrollment for its free preschool program in the 2019-20 school year. Qualifying families must meet eligibility guidelines, live in Monmouth or Middlesex counties and have a child who is 3, 4 or 5 years old who missed the cut-off date for kindergarten. There is an educational center in Freehold. Acelero Learning is a free, full-day, full-year program and offers extended day services for
before- and after-school care, geared toward working families. Head Start is a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Head Start promotes school-readiness and enhances social and cognitive development by providing educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families, according to a press release. The Monmouth County SPCA will celebrate its 25th anniversary dog walk and pet fair on April 27 at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The theme will be “My Dog is a Superhero” and will encompass a fun, colorful and exciting comic book theme. There will be dogs available for adoption, live music by The Wag, vendors, food trucks and refreshments, games and activities for children of all ages, plus fun photo ops with comic book characters. A new attraction this year is the “Disc-Connected K9’s Frisbee Dog Team,” a professional touring team which will bring their high-flying performances throughout the day. The guest speaker will be the author of “Walking With Peety,” Eric O’Grey, whose inspirational story of health and recovery were made possible with the help of his adopted shelter dog.
