Scholar athlete award winner hopes to ‘carry on the good name’ of North Brunswick when attending college

NORTH BRUNSWICK – The North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services presented its Scholar/Athlete/Artist Award for March to Surya Ananthu.

Surya is a senior at North Brunswick Township High School (NBTHS) with a GPA of 4.2. He has completed six Advanced Placement courses in the high school and is currently taking five Advanced Placement courses in statistics, English, macroeconomics, physics and human geography. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. He is the president of the MediterrAsian Club, where they celebrate the diverse traditions and cultures of Asia and the Mediterranean. He is also a member of DECA, according to the proclamation read in his honor during the March 18 Township Council meeting.

Surya is the only National Merit scholarship finalist from NBTHS.

He was a member of the NBTHS swim team and is an Eagle Scout for Troop 18. For many years, he has placed first as a Math Olympiad where he now mentors middle school students. He is a tutor at Mathnasium.

Surya is the recipient of three Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for his community service efforts. His projects include preparing sandwiches for soup kitchens and food packing for the “End Hunger” campaign sponsored by the Rotary Club, according to the proclamation.

 

Surya plans to study industrial engineering with a minor in business and computer science when he attends college in the fall.

“I hope to carry on the good name and reputation of North Brunswick because it’s an honor to be from this town,” he said.
