FREEHOLD – After nearly a decade of service as the municipality’s top elected official, J. Nolan Higgins, the mayor of Freehold Borough, will conclude his role with the governing body at the end of 2019.
Higgins is not seeking re-election in this year’s municipal race. His term will end on Dec. 31.
Higgins, a Democrat, was elected mayor in November 2011. He took office in January 2012, succeeding Michael Wilson, who served as mayor for more than a quarter-century.
Higgins served his first four-year term from 2012-15. He won re-election in November 2015 and began serving his second term in January 2016.
While Higgins’ tenure as mayor will conclude after eight years, his overall service to the borough has spanned more than three decades.
He is a lifelong resident of the town and in 1979 he joined the Freehold Fire Department as a volunteer. He was a member of the fire department for 36 years and is a former chief.
Higgins served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment for 18 years and is a member of numerous civic organizations.
In recognition of his service to his hometown prior to being elected mayor, Higgins was named the recipient of the John G. McGackin Award in 2007.
“I have met many wonderful people serving as mayor, and even rekindled some old friendships along the way,” said Higgins, who manages the Higgins Memorial Home, Center Street.
“I will have many fond memories of the time serving the people of Freehold Borough. It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve. Now I look forward to spending time with our four grandchildren,” he said.
Democrat Kevin Kane and Republican Marianne Earle are running to succeed Higgins as mayor in the Nov. 5 election.
