NORTH BRUNSWICK – A U.S. Army nurse will be forever memorialized in North Brunswick via a street sign in her honor.
Elizabeth (Klaus) Kalasin was recognized through the Veteran Street Sign Program on May 20 with the placing of a secondary street sign at the intersection of Holly Road and Spruce Road labeled Kalasin Way.
Kalasin was born on Sept. 8, 1931, grew up in New Brunswick and graduated from St. Peter’s High School.
She enlisted in the Army as a nurse during the Korean War from 1951-54, according to the proclamation read during the ceremony. She was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, at the Chronically Ill Hospital.
She received the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged from the military on May 19, 1954.
Kalasin married and settled in North Brunswick in 1961 into the newly established Maple Meade Estates community, according to the proclamation. She was active in the neighborhood clubhouse and community functions.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Mission Church in North Brunswick.
Kalasin married her husband Frank, who passed away in 2005, and raised three children: Suzanne, Peter, and Michael, who still resides at the family residence.
The matriarch passed away on July 16, 2011.
