Police are investigating a fatal crash in which a couple from South River was killed after colliding with an emergency vehicle on Aug. 11.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the fatal collision involved an East Brunswick Fire Department emergency vehicle and a vehicle which contained the couple, a man and his wife from South River, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.

The crash occurred on Old Bridge Turnpike in the area of Gunia Street in East Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11. The couple was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where both were pronounced deceased. The names of the victims are not being released until notification has been made to the family.

East Brunswick Chief of Police Frank LoSacco said in a prepared statement, “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the couple who was killed … in the crash on Old Bridge Turnpike in East Brunswick. I realize there are some questions regarding what was known about the crash and when notifications were made to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

“I have directed the Office of Professional Standards to review our internal handling of the crash to identify any policy or procedure changes that may need to be addressed concerning issues that were raised. I have given the Office of Professional Standards one week to produce this report and I will ensure that any changes necessary are made so that the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office continues to receive the full cooperation of our agency.”
